You are about 1 km from town but feel like you're a million miles from anywhere. As you walk further Byron Bay disappears into the distance, there is nothing but wild beach ahead of you, no houses in sight and it's all reserve as far as the eye can see. While NSW National Parks promotes it as a place to swim, fish, birdwatch, eat at the picnic area or sunbathe au natural at the nudist beach area, Tyagarah is rapidly gaining a sinister reputation with women regularly reporting they feel intimidated there. A report in The Northern Star of a sexual assault on a woman on the weekend at the Belongil area of Tyagarah beach, has seen dozens of women come forward on social media to report their discomfort and often fear, after being approached by what they have said are predatory males on the sand and in the dunes of the coastline. Detective Chief Inspector Brendon Cullen said the seriousness of the sex assault allegation meant officers from the serious crimes division were now on the ground, assisting local police with the investigation. When The Northern Star visited Tyagarah beach yesterday morning, patrons said they were shocked to learn of the attack.

Belongil Beach stretches north from the seawall at Main Beach car park up 2. Beyond the Creek mouth is Tyagarah Beach. Belongil is ideal for a long beach walk being less crowded than Main Beach. It is relatively safe for swimming however it is best to swim on the Southern end nearest to Byron Bay and when the beach is patrolled. Looking north you will see a small part of a shipwreck coming up from the water.
